On the roof before the landscaping.

On new builds we work off your builder's schedule, so the house is dried in early. The layers under the roof are further down this page.

Trim bent in our own shop.

Ridge caps, drip edge, valleys and one-off flashing come off our own brake in Afton, cut to fit your roof instead of pulled from a catalog.

Snow stays where you want it.

Snow rails and diverters hold the snowpack over doors, decks and driveways, so it melts in place instead of sliding off in one piece.

How we build a roof for Wyoming snow

  1. 1 of 8

    Framing

Every job starts at the bones. We check rafters and fascia for sag, rot and spacing before anything goes on top.

  2. 2 of 8

    Roof deck

Plywood or OSB in 4x8 sheets, nailed off on schedule. Soft spots get replaced, never covered over.

  3. 3 of 8

    Ice and water barrier

Self-adhered membrane along the eaves, right where Star Valley ice dams try to push water back up the roof.

  4. 4 of 8

    Synthetic underlayment

High-temp underlayment over the rest of the deck, lapped over the ice barrier so water always runs downhill.

  5. 5 of 8

    Drip edge

Bent in our own shop and run along every eave and rake, so water drops clear of the fascia instead of rotting it.

  6. 6 of 8

    Standing seam panels

Steel panels on concealed clips. No exposed screws to back out after years of freeze and thaw.

  7. 7 of 8

    Vented ridge

Lets warm attic air out at the peak, so the deck stays cold and snow does not melt and refreeze at the eaves.

  8. 8 of 8

    Snow rails

Clamped to the seams without piercing the panel. They hold the snowpack until it melts off in place.

How much does a new roof cost in Star Valley?

This uses rough regional planning ranges, not our price list, so treat the result as a guide for planning. Add it to your bid request and we will come out and give you a real, written number.

Rather not guess the size? Measure your roof from the public laser scan: find your house, and the roof's area and pitch come from USGS LiDAR, with a 3D model to check. If you measured your roof with the laser tool, use that range; this one is a rough guess from the footprint.

What customers say about Salt River Roofing

“The staff here is very knowledgeable. The key to doing a job right is knowing how and having the tools to do it.”

A family-owned shop, since 1989.

Our company history dates the family-owned business to 1989. From our shop on Highway 236 in Afton, we bend ridge caps, valleys and one-off flashing to fit the roof.

In that time we have put on more than 1,000 roofs across Star Valley and over the pass into Teton County. The materials moved with the valley: standing seam and synthetic slate have largely taken over from cedar, and most roofs we build now leave the shop with snow rails clamped to the seams.

Roofing questions people ask us

Snow rails, ice dams and metal roofs have their own pages: snow and ice and metal roofing. If your question is not here, call the shop at (307) 885-3084.

How much does a new roof cost in Star Valley, Wyoming?

As a rough regional planning range, a full replacement here runs about $5.50 to $22 per square foot of roof, installed, depending on the material, and Jackson and Teton County usually cost more. That range is for planning, not our price list. The only number that counts is the written bid we give you after a free site visit.

What is the best roof for heavy snow?

Standing seam metal is the most common choice in Star Valley. It sheds snow, has no exposed screws to back out, and lasts 50 years or more. Synthetic slate is popular on Jackson Hole homes for its stone look and impact resistance.

What areas do you serve?

All of Star Valley, from Smoot and Afton up through Thayne, Star Valley Ranch and Alpine, plus Jackson, Wilson, Teton Village and the rest of Teton County.

Can I buy roofing materials or flashing from you for my own project?

Yes. Our shop in Afton sells roofing materials and bends custom flashing and trim to order, and we are happy to answer install questions.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Salt River Roofing is licensed, bonded and insured, and a BBB Accredited Business. We have been family-owned and operated in Afton since 1989.

Do you give free estimates?

Yes. Every bid is free and starts with a site visit, so the number is based on your actual roof, not a guess.
