Low-slope roofs in snow country

A nearly flat roof does not shed snow, so it has to hold it and drain the melt. Ponding water, blocked drains and seams that open under ice are what fail a low-slope roof here, far more often than the membrane itself wearing out.

Snow also drifts. A low roof next to a taller wall collects more than its share, and that is the part of the roof to look at first after a big storm.

Membrane and hot-applied systems

EPDM and TPO single-ply membranes are the usual choice for low-slope commercial roofs. Hot-applied waterproofing is used where a roof needs a seamless, heavy-duty layer. As a rough regional planning range, membrane roofs run about $8 to $13 per square foot installed; real prices come from a bid.

Metal on shops, barns and outbuildings

Corrugated and Nor-Clad panels are the economical metal roofs for shops, barns and outbuildings, and standing seam suits buildings where looks and long life matter. Trim and flashing are bent in our shop in Afton, and the shop sells materials to builders and do-it-yourselfers too.

Questions we get about this

Do you work with general contractors on new buildings?

Yes. New construction roofing is part of what we do, and we can supply trim and flashing bent to the job.

Can you repair a membrane roof rather than replace it?

Often, if the membrane is sound and the damage is local, such as a failed seam or a puncture. If the insulation underneath is wet across a large area, replacement is usually the better money.

Do you roof churches and public buildings?

Yes. Ask for references from similar jobs near you when you request a bid.

Send us the building, the roof type and the problem, and we will set up a visit.
